Lucy McKnight

Birth: calculated 13 May 1791, Douglas, Worcester Co, MA

Death: 30 Sep 1872, Chicopee, Hampden Co, MA

Father: Thomas McKnight
Mother: Abigail Gould

Spouse: Samuel Brown
Marriage: 22 Nov 1813, Millbury, Worcester Co, MA

Notes:

She married Samuel Brown in Millbury, and lived most of her life there, per census records. Four children are recorded in Millbury: Abelina, Fancis Sage, Susan Sophronia, and William Agustus. In 1850 she was living with her children in Millbury, her husband deceased. In 1860 she might be the Lucy Brown, domestic, living in East Montpelier, Vermont. In 1870 she was living in Millbury with her daughter, Abelina Farnsworth.

She died in Chicopee, Massachusetts. A mortuary notice in the National Aegis, 12 Oct 1872 reads as follows: "In Chicopee, Sept 30, Mrs. Lucy Brown, aged 81 yrs. 4 mos. 17 days., formerly of Millbury."1

Another mortuary notice in the Massachusetts Spy, 11 Oct 1872 says: "Died: In Chicopee, Sep 30, while on a visit to friends, Mrs. Lucy Brown, aged 81 yrs 4 mos 17 days, formerly of Millbury. [Montpelier papers please copy.]" This suggests she resided for a time in Montpelier, Vermont, and/or had close relatives there.

Her Chicopee death record identifies Douglas as her place of birth, her father was Thomas McKnight, and she was aged 81 years 4 months 17 days.2

Thomas McKnight

Birth: about 1777

Death: 30 Oct 1836, Calais, Washington Co, VT

Father: Thomas McKnight
Mother: Abigail Gould

Spouse: Silence Cutler
Marriage: 30 Jul 1797, Montpelier, Washington Co, VT

Notes:

Thomas McKnight's death notice in the 7 Nov 1836 issue of the Vermont Patriot and State Gazette reads as follows: "Died, in Calais, Oct. 30, Mr. Thomas McKnight, of palsey, aged 59." This would place his birth circa 1777.

Gazetteer of Washington County, Vt., 1783-1889 has the following to say about Thomas:

"Thomas McKnight came from Douglass [sic], Mass., to Montpelier, with Col. Jacob Davis, in 1782 [sic, see below]. He was employed by Col. Davis awhile, and next engaged in butchering with Capt. Brown. He then settled on the farm known as the Cutler place, about a mile north of the village of Montpelier. About 1820 he moved to Calais, where he resided until his death, in 1836. In early life he married Silence, daughter of Stephen Cutler. Their children were Polly, John, Sally, Amasa, Thomas, and Leonard."1

The 1782 date is likely incorrect, because Jacob Davis did not move to Montpelier until 1787. The first settlement was made in 1786. Jacob Davis was the second settler of Montpelier, arriving 3 May 1787. He built a log house with his nephew, Parley Davis and a hired hand, and in March of 1788 he brought the rest of his family, becoming at that time a permanent resident of Montpelier. For several years afterward he built the necessary infrastructure for a successful town, including the first sawmill, the first gristmill, the first frame house, and so on.2

1787 is the earliest Thomas McKnight would have gone to Montpelier. He would have been 10 at the time. But it is more likely that he went later, maybe in 1792 when he would have been old enough to do useful work under the employ of Jacob Davis.

He was living in Calais in 1830, per census, aged 50-59.3
